Outfit inspiration for Fall. Models walking down a street in winter outfits

Coming into January, most of us will have been wrapped up in heavy winter wear for a good few months now; but with the new year finally here and the January sale in full swing, what better time than now to update your Fall wardrobe. Here are our top 6 favourite fall outfits.

Fall Outfit Essentials

Here are a few key items that you will wear again and again throughout Fall (and not because you’ve run out of outfit ideas).

Long Coats for Fall

Whoever said that all you need is 1 good coat for the colder months?! We can think of at least 3 great classics that will last you every season! No wardrobe is complete without a good Camel coat – looks great over dresses or an instant way to chic up your denim look. Kate Middleton is a fan of the classic long wool coats that cinch in at the waist creating a beautiful silhouette despite all the layers underneath; and if it’s good enough for our Kate then well it’s good enough for us! Now I must confess one of the reasons I get excited about the colder months is to bring out some of my ever so warm and fun furry coats (always faux fur mind). Whatever you’re wearing underneath doesn’t matter as with a long faux fur coat on you instantly feel glam (and warm!).

Oversized Jumpers

Another reason to love the colder months – oversized sweatshirts! They hide a multitude of sins and nothing feels so good as to throw on a big jumper over your skinnies and you’re good to go. You can check out our other article all about our love for oversized sweatshirts here.

Boots for Fall

Again another staple for the colder months, boots! I’m talking biker boots, ankle boots and over-the-knee boots. It’s worth investing in a good pair in each of these styles are they will never go out of style and are a great way to quickly update your Spring/Summer wardrobe to a more winter appropriate look (that and of course some warm socks and tights).

Casual Looks for Fall

When it comes to Fall fashion, nothing is easier than throwing on a pair of jeans, a jumper and a jacket, and yet it can create a super stylish (and warm) look.

From turtlenecks to v necks, any style of jumper will work for this look, but, if you want to be on style, this year is all about the oversized jumper. Oversized jumpers are easy to wear and are great for a casual weekend look. They hide all manner of sins (perfect for the period before the new year’s gym resolution starts) and look effortlessly chic. Plus, as you can easily add layers beneath, a good oversized jumper will take you from deep winter to late fall.

Distressed jeans and leather or suede jacket will add a street vibe to your look making it more fashionable.

A simple pair of heels will elevate your outfit giving it a more fashionable edge, alternatively ankle boots are a great way to finish the look and protect your feet from the British weather.

Just because it’s Fall doesn’t mean you can’t wear a short dress; Emma Robert’s pinafore dress is a great option for a casual Fall look.

Layering is a great idea for Fall as you can adjust the number and thickness of layers to the changing weather. You can easily add layers to any dress in Fall, the only thing to remember is, if you are wearing a patterned dress, go with a simple t-shirt.

This combo of a dark pinafore dress with a basic long-sleeved Breton t-shirt underneath is perfect for Fall. The dark green colour is a great seasonal colour choice, while the lighter Breton t-shirt lightens the outfit.

With such a simple look, you can wear louder shoes and add a pop of colour to this simple outfit.

While it may be warm enough where Emma Roberts lives to go bare legged in Fall, it certainly isn’t in Britain, so add a pair of simple black tights to give yourself a little more coverage.

Work Wear for Fall

Figuring out work wear can be tricky at the best of times, and in Fall, trying to find a balance between work appropriate and warm can be particularly tough. Despite not technically having an actual job, Olivia Palermo has mastered the work wear look; here are a couple of our favourite looks.

Skirts in Fall

I personally prefer wearing skirts to work and am a huge fan of this look for Fall work wear; it’s elegant, flattering and powerful all at once.

The pencil skirt is a work wear staple and is a great piece to invest in as they don’t go out of style. Pencil skirts look great on  women of all shapes and sizes; if, like Olivia Palermo, you are tall and lean they make you look even taller and slimmer and if you have curves they accentuate them brilliantly.

Swapping your usual work-shirt for a simple loose-fit jumper is an easy adjustment for Fall. Tuck it into the waist line of your pencil skirt for a  chic look that is easy to wear throughout the day.

This Fall look is very versatile when it comes to colours; in white it has a real elegance, but, if you prefer darker colours it will also look great in navy, black or even a dark green. Alternatively, you could mix colours, just always remember to keep it reasonably subtle for work.

As with your actual work, conquering work wear is all about attention to detail. Make sure your shoes are tidy and don’t go over the top with jewellery. A thin belt is a great accessory with this look at it looks smart and draws attention to your waist, which is important with baggy jumpers.

This look is also a great option for work to evening wear as all you need to do is swap the jumper for a simple cami and you’re ready to go.

I know I’ve said it several times,  but seriously, Fall is all about layers. In this case, they are great not only for warmth but for colour. A dark but plain sleeveless jumper or cardigan over a boldly coloured shirt is a great way of adding colour to your workwear and giving the look a personal twist without your outfit becoming overbearing. Similarly stripes allow colour but without being OTT, plus they hark back to menswear work wear which is always a fashionable choice. A warm burgundy is a great colour for Fall.

Depending on your job, a smart pair of ironed jeans can be work appropriate, if not simply swap the jeans for a similar pair of black or navy trousers will work just as well for this look.

Keep your footwear subtle and finish the look with black shoes that you are comfortable walking in.

Best Evening Looks for Fall

This sophisticated Fall evening look is all about suggestion; showing a little bit something to give an idea. The combination of high waisted palazzo pants and a cropped jumper will show just a small bit of your midriff without being, a,  overly sexy, or, b, cold. Similarly, wearing an off the shoulder jumper will reveal just a hint of your bralette; again, just a suggestion of what’s beneath.

Palazzo pants are a great choice for Fall as they not only  make your legs look long and your waist thin, but, as a seasonal bonus, they are a lot warmer than tights. Kendall Jenner’s white pants look super chic and can make a affordable outfit look expensive.

To keep the outfit chic and luxury looking stick to two main colours. Black and white are a great combination as both are bold yet simple and a black bralette under a white jumper will draw emphasis to the contrasting items.

Day to Night Dresses for Fall

Velvet has been hugely popular in the last year and has been used in everything from bags and shoes to bomber jackets and strappy ’90’s style dresses. A velvet dress is also a great choice for Fall as the material has a warmth and softness to it perfect for this season. A wrap dress is super easy to wear and looks good on all shapes. The long sleeves are not only practical but counter the low neckline which adds a sexiness to the look.

This warm, rich plum colour is a beautiful shade to wear in Fall. However, as it is quite a bold colour, keep your accessories muted and matching.

As you can see in the picture, Giorgia Tordini is wearing this dress in the day with laced boots that add weight and urban edge to an otherwise quite romantic outfit. To take the look to evening swap the heavy boots for a pair a elegant sandals.

Tips for Fall Dressing

  • The sky may be grey but your wardrobe doesn’t have to be – add colour.
  • As your clothes become bulkier be careful to balance your outfit.
  • If possible choose leather shoes as suede, satin and velvet will be ruined by winter weather.
  • When it comes to work wear make sure everything is sharp.
  • Layers, Layers, Layers
